Title: New To Magic
Post by: Odric86 on August 10, 2012, 02:05:11 AM
Hi everyone,

I'm new to magic and am trying to get as much info as possible. There is ALOT that is confusing to me and I want to know if anyone knows of a book or article etc. that has basically everything you need to know about the game. I have been on the wizards site but seems info is limited and separated all in different areas. Any info on if there is a book with all the info etc. would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

As the te great and wise black jester would say "read the rulebook". That's got all the basics you'd need to know and occasionally you'll run into something that's confusing you can look up the rulings on the card or ask the question here

Welcome to the world of mtg! There's a basic rule book you can find under the rules section in this app. Start there, and if anything still confuses you, feel free to post about it.

I'd advise reading the basic rule book which is stickied in the rules section of the forum. As far as learning about the game I went about it by watching videos of high level competitions on YouTube. The announcers definitely provide a lot of information if you listen, and you can easily google cards or whatever else piques your interest. Another good place to learn about magic would be the wizards website. Navigate to the magic section, go to daily mtg, and read through the archives of some of the articles. I'd stay away from the ones that focus on deck building until you're a little more familiar with the game, but there is plenty of interesting reading to be done. And finally, read through this forum and participate in discussions and ask questions and you'll pick stuff up in no time.

I always try to recommend Gavin Verhey's articles ReConstructed for new players.  Start here:

http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/rc/188

He's got some great tips on deckbuilding which is very tough for new players.  Other good ways to get going is to get a Prebuilt deck, either an Intro Pack to help learn, or a more competitive Event Deck.  Then build on it.

I am a fan of The Deckbuilder's Tool Kit.  It's inexpensive, gives you plenty of fundamental cards, plenty of land (which are essential to the game), and a couple of booster packs.

Duels of the Planewalkers (xBox, PS3, Steam/iPad) is a great way to get into the game too, it'll handle all the rules stuff so you can focus more on playing and less on "how does this work?"

Also, Core sets (M11, M12, M13) are good for beginners because they are made for you guys.  The abilities are simpler, almost everything is explained on the card itself, and it doesn't have crazy stuff like Double Faced Cards.

Lastly, don't forget to have fun!  This IS a game after all.  ;)

Welcome to iMtG.

Play play play

Even if it's wrong sometimes just familiarizing yourself with the cards. I find it the best way to learn is to practic and make mistakes. I've learned more dome making a mistake and never wanting to do that again.
