Title: M13 draft strategies (no this isn't an article )
Post by: Greg54js on August 09, 2012, 11:12:14 PM
Okay so what are some strong strategies for core set drafting? Best cards to draft? Best color combo?

Thanks

Only drafted once so not sure if this is helpful:
BREAD

Draft the best possible creature (usually bomb, unless you open a Nicol Bolas) in the pack at the time, after the first couple of turns you would have an idea of what colours you're going. Should have a good number of creatures in your draft deck, I try to run about 15-18 of the 23 spots as creatures (yes I use the 23-17 spells to land split).
Removal are next priority, I feel M13 has little of but the key ones are O-rings and {Murder}. Burn spells for red if you are going that colour.
Evasive creatures or enchantment/equipments that grants evasion or worthwhile stat bonuses. Otherwise efficiently cost spells (one the curve or below the curve cmc for good effects). I find the kitesail (grants flying for cmc 2, equip 2) and the Dark/Divine Favors to be good picks. Even {Mark of the Vampire}, lifegain is decent.
Aggro is somewhat the evasive creatures, or low cost creatures.
Draw spells are meh, 40 cards is easy to go through (32 by turn 2 at least).

With that said, M13 has the most synergy with Black, White, and/or Green. Blue is usually supplimented by White (bounce and flyers), or Black (somewhat control, again needed for Bolas). Black and White has exhalted and either with Green for {Rancor} is great. If you manage to draft dual lands (usually not a top priority unless you know you are going for tri-coloured and/or lack ramp in the form of {Farseek} and {Gem of Becoming}).

Unless you are just playing around for laughs, do not draft {Battle of Wits}. Your library would like be 40-50 spells and about 180 lands or more....

Went 2-3 with b/w exalted. Bought the exalted intro deck as well to work on my own version for standard

Removal is usually the first pick for me, and most of the people I know. In m13, the only cards that get first picked over {murder} or {oblivion ring} are value cards, {Rancor}, and bomb rares.

Even then removal sometimes takes the pick - I was passed {Odric, Master Tactician} first pack last night, and the pack was missing an uncommon so I know he did not get and take a foil rare/mythic.
