Just in on the ProTour break: going forward there will be no more modern ProTours.
I think it's good for the format, since Wizards essentially admits in the interview after the announcement that the ban-list was used to spice up the newer decks on the modern PT, among other reasons. Do you guys think modern will settle down again now?
(Other reasons are the exposure of the new set, and the lack of a need to boost modern popularity).
Aaron Forsythe did an in-depth article on it, on the mothership.

And I have now lost all interest in the pro tour unless they have legacy. Damn them!
The PT has become a marketing instrument for the newest sets. I don't expect new cards to make a lot of appearance in legacy decks. If they would, they'd be pushing for archetypes like they did with Modern, leading to the Eldrazi Winter.
Well looks like I will no longer watch the pro tour.
Shame. Today's top 8 was a pretty good show.
Personally not that big of a fan of standard for financial reasons. I want to play the best deck but don't want to pay 40 dollars for a card that is going to cycle out and be useless. I love tier decks and being the best, which is why I dropped standard altogether.

Don't have to enjoy playing or paying for a format to enjoy watching a good game of mtg?
Personally i find watching modern or legacy games uninteresting because I don't play the format. Same with standard now, because I don't play it anymore. (I mostly play edh now.)

They say they are doing this for "diversity" or to "show off the new sets" but it sounds to me like this is just a money scheme to "standardize" (no pun intended) all off the competitive play to a format which will always make them money (because of rotation, which doesn't occur in modern, legacy, etc)
I agree. It's a money deal. But WOTC is a company and I'm not upset with them for that. As someone who comes from a business background I know you need to put business first. Modern doesn't make Wizards money, standard does. At the same time I won't jump on the standard train, did once and put too much money into it and got nothing in return. In all honesty, another reason I don't watch standard matches is because I'm not familiar with the cards nor do I want to be because it'll be a temptation. I know myself, I'm an impulse buyer when it comes to magic lol. No need.
Like I just trade? I don't "spend money" on standard I just don't understand lol. I mean I preordered cards for speculation purposes I guess but like all I got was 8 declaration in stone for 3$ a piece which came out good.
But I don't buy packs I just play off winnings.. And sales.. I dunno maybe it's not as easy to do everywhere else

Look at wizards attempts to profit on the format via Modern and legacy masters. The biggest issues when it comes to making money on the older formats (via reprinting cards) is while ot makes it easier for new people to get ito the format people who are already playing it would be up in arms to see valuable cards getting reprinted. Imagine if wizards said they would be reprinting orginal duel lands? Personally as a newish(started RtR set) player I would never have tought about buying them. But as a rare or even mythic in a MM like set focused on reprints I might want to crack some packs at the chance of it. But the people who have spent hundreds on them would be pissed.
They try to limit the price drops reprints cause by making the reprint sets cost more but even then that makes it less profitable for them. Wizards just can't make a solid profit off of older formats without angering the communities of those formats.
Plus as a new player standard seems far more acessable, trades are easier to find, packs can be bought/won and the start up cost is arguably less. Sure in the long run modern is less costly because of no rotation. But think back as a new person. Your friend teaches you a card game, its fun but you are not sure how into it you will get. Or after playing for a few months if it will get boring and you will quit. How much will you spend? Standard is just more accessable to new players in my opinion
