Hello, I have been playing MtG since Innistrad, but I've just been using online decklists. Recently a friend of mine pointed out that it's almost like cheating. Now when I go to play FNM, I feel guilty. So if you guys/girls could give me some tips on deck building, it would be much appreciated!

This help section is more for issues with the app than it is for magic issues, but to answer your question:

"Net decking" is in no way cheating, and you shouldn't feel guilty about doing so. Some people enjoy the deckbuilding aspect (like myself) and some people are more invested in the games. The nice part about magic is that it is everything to everyone.

That being said, deck building is all about identifying powerful cards and identifying powerful synergies, and identifying the weaknesses in the deck once you've built it.

I agree!

Net decking isn't cheating, but it feels great when your brew is winning FNMs past people piloting netdecks.

I personally don't netdeck. I see it as a good idea, but I personally don't like it. If you want to get into deck building play EDH! EDH is the perfect place for deckbuilding

I am personally vehemently against net decking. To me, it feels like it's not really winning. I'd rather play with something I have slaved over, trying to perfect, than something that took 5 minutes of reading and 1 trip the the LGS to buy all the pieces. I think building and reworking and even failing are what makes a player better. You gain a better understanding of synergy, and sometimes discover hidden combos that you never would have known about if you built someone else's deck.

But to each their own, I guess.

It's absolutely not cheating...

I prefer to take something established and tweak it to my preference. Why re-do the work that hundreds of others have already done? I don't have time to play test a deck 100 times against each match up, but someone has generally already done that... I think it's reasonable to take a net deck as a guideline and make it your own. I don't like going 75/75 on someone else's deck, and generally that is NOT a great way to win anyway because "net decks" are customized by someone else for specific meta games or tournaments.

This, when you talk about standard and even modern to a degree, it's not hard to figure out the best cards that work well together. The first week after Khans came out, you could see the first versions of the Sylvan Caryatid/Courser/Siege Rhino Abzan decks and the Rabblemaster Jeskai decks that were destined to be popular for the duration of the format. I made a deck that was almost identical to some of those lists with almost no outside assistance (the one card I missed was Wingmate Roc). With such a limited card pool, there's going to be convergence, why not look at what the pros came up with after hours of testing you don't have time for?

And these 2 comments are the logical other side of the coin. Thank you guys. I can't give you a concrete answer, other than it just feels wrong to me.
