Pre-Mending, walkers were basically immortal, ie Urza had his head chopped off and he was still alive. Once the Mending occurred, Jeska used some planeswalker "energy" to seal the rift, which diminished walkers powers greatly. Bolas is trying to regain all that power back. Perhaps that is why he unleashed the Eldrazi Titans
