I don't know but I think that things like affirmative action are one of the driving forces of racism in America today. We are all equal so why should some people get benefits for being a race when someone of another race doesn't get those same benefits. Isn't that implying that the race that is receiving the advantage is "inferior" and needs that leg up to even compete with the rest of the world. Affirmative action is discrimination and every organization that take race into account (with some exceptions such as doctors offices where members of some races are more susceptible to certain diseases) is discriminating. If we are all equal, why aren't we all treated equal?
Also when people are constantly told they're equal to everyone else and then other people are treated better, worse, are more successful getting away with things they shouldn't be, etc. It leads to things like jealousy, hate, stereotypes and racism.
I believe that racism exists systematically. 70% of prisoners in the United States are non-whites. 1 in 100 people are in prision. The US has 25% of the worlds prison population.
The war on drugs has proven to be a useful tool for targetting blacks as criminals, where their white counterparts are given much lighter sentences. We've every reason to believe that whites do as many drugs as non-whites, but are imprisioned with much different results.
Yes, racism still exists. Even if you do not see it, think its overblown, or just because you can't say a word - think its silly. The imagined profundity in believing that being called a "cracker" puts you on equal footing with blacks is inconceivable even by the most self-deceived.
I have difficulty believing most feel this way, and rather think its either immaturity or lack life experience. As far as "affirmative action" is concerned, it does not effect ones life as often as its portrayed, but is ineffective as far as correcting the issue it's attempting to, and drives a wedge further into "race relations". It's also coercive and a less then optimal for human flourishing.
The government doesn't want a strong community between the races. Keeps us distracted amongst ourselves. They put whites on a pedestal and give them lee way, and harass non whites for anything they can and make them look like the "bad guys". There's bad people of every race. It's a stereotype that white people are generally afraid of other races, whether it be around them or talk about or to them. And I also believe that just like how police harass people (via acts like the "stop and frisk" program) until the person they're harassing gets defensive and the cops arrest them for resisting or whatnot, I see a similarity in how that could effect the way those races view authority or how they "should" act. It's like if I know works going to suck, I'm going in ready to argue with someone or be pissed all day. It's creates a reason for them to be targetted as suspicious people.
Racism is still around but it's less prevelant than it was 50 years ago. An example of this is the Cheerios commercial where it's a mixed race couple raising there daughter and people didn't like this race is still a big deal to people but it really shouldn't be.
Cracker really isn't as harsh as nigger. More hate is involved with nigger.
I think usually the most offensive term to a racist white is to refer them as back country hick white trash. Simply because that is the mindset they exhibit.
I'm a mixed American of Filipino and Swedish/misc Europe, so I never really got the ideas of racism as a kid, stereotypes could pop up though as certain demographics fulfill the stereotype.
I can understand disliking someone because of the negative action they produce that support the stereo type. Old Korean women in Ktown just really can never drive, this is a stereotype yes, but majority of that demographic fulfill that stereotype in korea town, so i stay ahead and far away from all elder asian drivers in Ktown.
What I can't understand however, is looking at someone, seeing they are different from you for their family origin and then from that alone hating them.
For those that act like this, I lose respect for those people instantly and deter myself away from them.
My friends are essentially multi cultural and for a person in my group to feel unwarranted hate from another, that can't be tolerated. Most of us aren't pure bred, and the people who are mixed: usually we are much sexier.
