I know this is going to open a huge can of worms, but I have never seen Star Wars or Star Trek. My mother thought they were both stupid; so I never watched either. Now that I'm married to a Star Wars fan and best friends with a Trekkie, I need to know what are the pros and cons of both. Right now I'm leaning towards Star Trek thanks to Chris Pine. (I loved him in This Means War and Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.) However, Star Wars is now owned by Disney giving it a huge plus.
Depends on if you want quality or quantity. Star Trek has three different series set in the universe and countless movies, whereas Star Wars has three amazing movies and three not-so-amazing movies. Really you could get into both. You can easily watch all of Star Wars in two days and then start on the Star Trek legacy.
Personally I think Star Wars is better. I grew up on it, but I have only just recently gotten into Star Trek, so my opinion is biased.

STAR WARS. It will teach you betrayal, responsibility, the difference between good and evil, action and consequence, not to mention the wisdom in retaining international marketing rights.
Star Trek is a soap opera. A space opera, if you will. It will teach you everything that isn't possible, or almost possible, scientifically. Now that said, "wrath of khan" kicked ass as did the lady's man of a captain who always managed to get his shirt off.
But STAR WARS is a legendary epic. One that I find as rewarding as homer's "the Iliad" and "the odyssey".
Star Wars Pros -Action Packed -Great Story -Memorable Characters -Immersive universe -Epic Lightsaber Battles Star Wars Cons •no one in the movie can aim a gun worth poo •you may not know what anyone is talking about Star Trek Pros -Lots of Material -Immersive Universe -Many Settings Star Trek Cons -Characters aren't extremely unique from one another -Much more Drama -You may not know what anyone is talking about.
My suggestion is watch both of them and see which one you like. There is no law saying you must like only one of them.
True. I was blind for 37 years, Star Wars only. I've seen my first two Star Trek movies last week, and while Force will always be with me, I'm a Trekkie now
Starwars is pretty cool. Except the prequel garbage and other expanded universe things.
The barrier of entry for Star Trek is too great. Hundreds of episodes and things. The JJ Abrams movies are the "New World Order" of Star Trek. It makes the series approachable for a new audience. With that being said, they're really just action movies with explosions and people shooting each other. The "science fiction" element has been removed, making it more "science fantasy" like Starwars. Meant to appeal to the lowest common denominator - popcorn eating audiences who wouldn't stand for an honest treatment of the source material.
I do like JJ Abrams for his use of real sets and actors. Instead of jamming cartoon monsters onto a screen and CGI everything (like Lucas).

Respectfully, I disagree. What makes Star Trek interesting and head and shoulders above an average action movie is Spock and his interactions with normal people, especially with Kirk's ethics. Granted, I'm weird
I personally like Star Trek better, I've seen all of them over a period of a year and they were fun to watch Star Wars is really close to as good but I liked Star Trek better
