What is first strike?

First strike is a keyword that allows a creature to deal it's damage in combat before creatures that don't have first strike, as opposed to how creatures normally do damage all at the same time.

This allows you to, for example, block a 7/1 creature with your 1/1 first-strike creature, and the 7/1 will die before it can deal its damage, and your 1/1 will survive. If not for first strike, the two creatures would kill each other when they deal damage at the same time.
